INDUSTRIAL Engineer
Earning the childhood nickname "puzzle meister," Amanda's always had a knack for engineering many parts into a cohesive whole. She graduated Cum Laude from Clemson University in May 2014 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. In January 2015, Amanda began graduate school at Purdue University to continue to study, research, and practice industrial engineering as applied to the improvement of health and healthcare. She has worked as a Quality Improvement Analyst at primary health clinics since August 2015.
A background in industrial engineering means that Amanda's studied how complex systems work. This requires an understanding of the integration of many fields including management, logic, statistics, and psychology. Over the past 6 years, Amanda's gained educational and professional experience in human factors engineering, systems engineering, and quality improvement methodology. She has led a wide array of systems improvement projects with measurable results incuding increased time efficiency, reduced costs, and better health outcomes. For details, see Amanda's résumé below.
PAtient
Before Amanda was an engineer, she was a patient. Amanda had a congential kidney defect, and it took about six years from the recognition of its symptoms for her to be correctly diagnosed. Through multiple misdiagnoses, Amanda and her family personally experienced the physical, financial, and emotional consequences of failure in the healthcare system.
While some may worry that analytical engineers can't understand the dynamic, delicate nature of healthcare, Amanda's extended time as a patient differentiates her. Because of her experience, Amanda is driven to design systems that better support carers' cognitive tasks and better engage patients and their families in order to ultimately improve health, the costs of health, and the experience of care.
